We met up at breakfast this morning, with most everybody having slept well & nobody feeling the effects of the altitude too badly.
Our sightseeing today took us outside Cusco to visit 4 sets of Incan ruins in the hills nearby. We traveled by bus to our first stop, Tambomachay, a sacred ceremonial site featuring fountains & fine Incan stonework for different periods.
Just a short walk away is the site of Puca Pucara, believed to have been a guard house/check point on the road to Cusco. It still enjoys commanding views over the surrounding countryside.
With the Inca Trail hike starting tomorrow, it seemed a good idea to stretch our legs a little, so we got off the bus & took a nice walk through the countryside to our next stop, Q'enqo.
Along the way we saw farmhouses & learned a little about the 3000+ varieties of potato grown in Peru & how they are dried.
Our final stop this morning was the famed site of Sacsayhuamen, once a powerful fortress with rows of incredible walls built with huge rocks that fit perfectly together without need for mortar!
The boys demonstrate the size of one of the biggest rocks.
Admiring the view over Cuso.
From Sacsayhuamen a few hardy souls decided to hike down into the city.
The Cook boys decided against taking the high road & chose the path less traveled!
This evening dinner was in a restaurant named 'The Happy Little Guinea Pig', though the Peruvian national dish wasn't on our menu.
Pisco sours apparently were though.
Along with alpaca.
